Too Early For Summer? Too Bad.
April 13th, 2010 | Posted by Drummer JohnLet me be honest up front: I love Outkast. I’m a fan of both Big Boi and Andre 3000 and the music they create. That being said I’m currently in love with the new song from Big Boi – Shutterbug. The song is from his soon to be released album currently named Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty.
- This song instantly has your head bobbing. Sick, sick beat.
- Big Boi’s typical slick lyrics talking about everything from Gomer Pyle and Sergeant Slaughter, to Risky Business, Wu Tang and “shittin on n****** and peein on the seat.” He even sings a little Soul II Soul.
- This is major hip hop at its best. Catchy and infectious.
This song instantly had me craving sunshine, a big system and some friends at the beach. With that in mind and summer inching closer (at least here on the West Coast) I thought I’d throw out a few summertime sounds.
First up: Classics. These are bands that are always appreciated on a sun filled day. Nothin’ creative but tried and true.
Bob Marley – Anything
- Bob is perfect when the “Sun Is Shinning”.
Sublime – Almost every song
- A “Summertime” band for sure.
Beach Boys/Donovan/ 60’s surf songs
- The California sound. Hard to hear this music and not crave the waves.
Second: Memories. The songs that may or may not have the summertime feel but either way they are forever entrenched in your mind right next to certain sunshine memories. Here are a few of mine.
Modest Mouse – White Lies Yellow Teeth (Couldn’t find a link to the actual song anywhere. Sure it’s on itunes or other music download sites)
- Can’t hear this song without remembering long weekends spent on Lake Cowichan with friends, beers, bbqs, wake surfing and campfires. My buddy Joe always gets the worst sunburn on the first day. Thanks for never using sunscreen and providing entertainment through your pain year in and year out, buddy.
- Song wise this is a little disjointed with quirky guitar. Very Modest Mouse.
Summertime In The LBC – The Doveshack
- High school, driving around thinking you’re cool, trying to talk to girls and no real responsibilities. “Why do we do what we do when we do what we do hangin’ out late with no curfew?”
- Laid back Cali hip hop.
- I have 100’s of summertime memories with this song. I’ve been listening to this song since ’94. Wow that makes me feel old. Drinking at Sandbar in San Diego, road trips, lying on the grass in Stanley Park watching clouds, cliff jumping, horshoes on the beach and the list goes on and on.
- I’m not sure what exactly it is about this song that gets me. The funky beat? The lyrics? Did I like it and then play it lots in the summer? Did it just happen to be playing while some of those memories were made and now is forever linked to good times? I think this is one of those songs I can’t separate from life and I have no way to objectively talk about it. Weird.
Make Damn Sure – Taking Back Sunday
- Reminds me of living in San Diego and throwing this on as I hopped out of the shower, threw on shorts and sandals and headed to the beach with friends.
- It’s the vocals and the lyrics that I really like. Good song.
Those are a few classic summertime sounds and a few songs that have personal connections for me. Thanks Big Boi for Shutterbug and getting me ready for summer. What songs instantly take you back to summer memories?
