STOMP

March 25th, 2010 | Posted by Drummer John

As in keeping with my Soundtrack Junkie status, I have chosen to write about a soundtrack that is so diverse that you just cannot help liking it all because it is put together perfectly.  This one is also based on true events, reason for tagging it in the category of “documentary” as one tag.  This soundtrack has E40 to Ozzy and throw in some hard metal that ROCKS!!  Yes, it is also about “Stepping” and breakdancing/krunk/battling in “the Streets” for respect and a little of gang drug money at the beginning that tainted it some for me but keep watching.  The beginning starts you out with a cameo with Chris Brown, playing Deron, before he flipped his scrip and wigged out, and he was good in it, no doubt on his dancing skills.  He attends a dance competition on a different turf and they beat the champs, very bad and then hustle them.   The other gang wants to go double or nothing and Darnell wants it but (a truly amazing underground street dancer Columbus Short), Chris Brown, told his brother no.  But his brother begs and pleads, so ya know what happens.  They win, leave with the money, get jumped by the other gang and Deron ends up getting shot and killed.  Exit Chris Brown.  It’s a good thing too because he would take away from playing Darnell, his older brother who goes to live with his Uncle and Aunt, work and attend college.  He reluctantly goes.  He pulls up to Truth University, which I think we need a for REAL truth university, maybe people would be enlightened to what the truth has to offer!, and sees something overwhelming to him.  His uncle is seriously pissed about the whole thing and not real nice to him at all for a while!  You feel for his character from the beginning, you are FOR him in the whole movie, it doesn’t matter what it would have been about, he still would have had my attention.  He blasted onto the screen and is a soul in a living body of fluid music.  The way he moves with the music makes it’s own, you have two erotic experiences going on at one time inside you and it’s awesome.  Some of the best in the game are on this soundtrack and I hate sounding like American Bandstand and saying, “It’s got a good beat and easy to dance too!”, PUKE, but you cannot sit still through this WHOLE movie. Even if you’re not a real fan of that type of music, if you classify music, I tend not to, but if you see art and hear it, this movie’s soundtrack and choreography go SO well that it gives the song even more life.  It is excellently composed with song after song that grabs you in one way or another.  It may bust out with some rap and go into Hard Hitting Rock and you realize how cool and easy that was and find yourself rewinding, listening again, listening to the different tracks going on in the background and be amazed at what you hear.  It is a soundtrack fro music lovers and a movie for art lovers.
It is perfection in direction by Sylvan White.  He has the artist, the whole artist eye.  He sees the whole scope, front scene and the behind scene.  He did a damn fine job on choosing the team Sam Retzer and Tim Boland  for composing the soundtrack and the genuis of the choreography is given to Dave Scott, with his ability to literally make music with a human body’s own energy and air, he defies laws of gravity or they just work with him because he respects them so.  These dancers aren’t novices, even if they have never been in a real studio, they have physical fitness out the wahooo and control over their friggin eyelashes.  Everything about this movie is music.
It was released in 2007 with a little controversy over the use of some of the real Fraternity names, but that got worked out.  “The Critics”, and if I haven’t told you if a critic downs it,  I usually like it, ripped it apart unfairly.  It cost $13 Million to make and grossed $25 million the first weekend.  Not too shabby.  And if you think this is all about rap and gangs, you got the wrong idea.  It is shot mainly on campuses in Georgia.
We also get the pleasure of Ne-yo and his personality as Rich Brown, Darnell’s roommate.
Have you ever hated a song and then saw the video and loved it or vice versa?  Some of the songs on this soundtrack you would HATE, I would, JUST hearing the song.  I hear it on here and see what it makes extend from it and it takes on a whole other meaning, I see it in a different way, the way it was meant to be played, to move to.  There are so many artist who contributed to this soundtrack that it’s unreal.  There is even some country in it.
I also don’t know if I have ever told you or not but I love to dance so it is especially “spiritual” to me because I can get up and dance to music that I normally wouldn’t to, but this music is too good, I have too many things I already do and wanna try, did I mention I LOVE TO DANCE!!!
Story is good, entertwined with drama, love, some humor and a sense of tradition that is in keeping with Fraternity Brothers and the brotherhood of loving the same thing, music and dancing!

We ain't gon do the wave no mo, we gon stomp til we knock the bottom out of the floor!
