The Easy Way Out: Ipod On Random
March 23rd, 2010 | Posted by Drummer JohnSo for my first post I decided to take any major thinking out of the equation. I put my ipod on random and listened to the first 5 songs that played. Here they are with why they’re on the ipod and a few quick thoughts about each song. A cop out of sorts but I feel that if I’m willing to admit to the cop out it mitigates some of the laziness. Right? Right. Thanks for supporting me on this one.
Spaghetti Junction – Outkast – Stankonia
- It’s on my ipod because I love Outkast and Stankonia is one of their best albums.
- Great southern drawl on the chorus.
- Horns, oh you subtle horns. Not as blatant as the horns on “The Way You Move” and not as brilliant as the horns on “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” but quality horns nonetheless.
- Not their best effort but still a good steady head bobber.
El Scorcho -Weezer – Pinkerton
- On the ipod simply because Pinkerton is my favourite Weezer album.
- I bought this album the day it came out and I can’t listen to any of it without picturing my old room covered in posters of Beastie Boys, snowboarders and bikini clad girls I’d never talk to.
- It was a major commercial let down and now is a critic’s darling but I like to think just this once I was ahead of the curve on this one.
- Funky sounds, great drunken sing along chorus and lyrics like “I asked you to go to the Green Day concert but you said you never heard of them / How cool is that? / So I went to your room and read your diary.” What’s not to like?
Windowsill – Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
- Neon Bible has “Black Mirror” on it and that made the whole album a must have on my ipod.
- Got the angst and a little bit of protest to it.
- Good song but only time I ever hear it is when random chooses it for me.
Genius of Love – Tom Tom Club – Tom Tom Club
- Band formed by husband and wife duo Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz former members of Talking Heads.
- One of the most sampled songs of the 80’s.
- Great little loose guitar with pin pricks of emphasis.
- Any song that honors Bootsy Collins in the lyrics is coming from the right place.
Millionaire – Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf
- It’s on my ipod because I fucking love this song.
- In fact I fucking love this band. Queens has slowly but surely worked their way deep into my heart.
- Um…Rock ‘n’ Roll…yes please.
- Anyone that can listen to this song and resist the urge to move or to scream, well, your soul is likely dead. You might wanna get that checked out.
- To quote the song itself “Give me soul and show me the door / Metal heavy, soft at the core / Gimme toro, gimme some more” GIMME SOME MORE!
That’s my ipod on a quick random play. I find I go through phases where listening to my ipod on random is like a mini birthday party. Not knowing what’s coming next and being pleasantly surprised sometimes makes the music listening experience even more enjoyable. Good on ya “random play” good on ya. What’s the first 5 on your ipod’s random play today?
-Daniel

Your first song mentioned on your first post is an Outkast song. And off Stankonia at that. We’re off to a very good start, Daniel. A very good start indeed

I’ll have to find a way to thank my ipod. It just seems to know what’s gonna be best.
