The Bourdain Effect

http://international.iupui.edu/_Assets/images/800px-Flag_of_Mexico_svg.pngIn September, I moved back to BC after living in Mexico for two years. I lived in a tourist town and anyone’s who’s done that knows, the only music scene going on is one hundred and one versions of Hotel California, Brown Eyed Girl and Satisfaction. There is little to no original talent. That’s not to downplay my beloved Playa Dawgs ’cause if anyone can cover a tune, it’s Andy and our very own badass Drummer doing it for the puppies. But for someone who’s music library depends very heavily on discovering new music, it was not a great town to live in.

I was watching an episode of No Reservations with my favorite television asshole, Anthony Bourdain, one Caribbean night up with my freshly born baby boy, when he said, “I’ve been out of America so long, even Aerosmith sounds good”. I had a good laugh at that. It’s so true. I remember walking around Playa Del Carmen’s sad excuse for a Walmart and hearing Linkin Park come on over the loud speaker and thinking, Jesus, I’ve been out of Canada so long even Linkin Park sounds good.

But, there were those shining moments when little Joey would wake me up for a feed at 4am and I’d flip on MTV Latin America and hear some really great music. Of course, anyone who’s had a baby knows that those moments aren’t the greatest for your memory and I lost track of a lot of those great tunes. I did manage to hold on to a few though and I thought I’d share my favorite with you. It’s by a band named Le Baron out of Mexico City and it’s called Exilio:
