Knitting Something Nice For You

Hello vast internet. My name is Jamison, and I have the pleasure of being the latest addition to the Streamroller author list. I’m a college student, and musician, and it seems like music blogging is the perfect combination of those two loves. But that’s enough about me for now. You’re here to read about new music, and that’s what I hope to help provide. So let’s get into it:

MP3: Aidan Knight – Jasper (An email address is required).
This is Aidan Knight. Aidan is a multi-faceted singer-songwriter from Victoria, who has played in a multitude of bands over the past few years, and he’s just now preparing to release his debut LP, “Versicolour”. The record was recorded in Langley, with Jon Anderson, and it’s without a doubt one of the most well-produced, well-written local record to be released this year. Aidan is an old soul; he writes songs that reflect the many give-and-takes that life has to offer. His lyrics tend to be child-like, yet serious and complex (see Fighting Against Your Lungs); the melodies are rooted in basic folk ideas, but are layered with a thick haze of ambiance and subtle noise (see Knitting Something Nice For You). One of the most powerful songs on the record is the first one, The Sun. Aidan tells the story of a bicycle ride home, a seemingly common experience. The brilliant thing about this song, and the record as a whole, is Aidan’s ability to take the common, and create something beautiful out of it. The feeling of the sun shining down on you as you ride your bicycle home, wind in your hair, coasting down a hill. These quiet moments are the essence of a creative life, and Aidan has found a way to give words, and set music, to them. And then there’s Jasper. Jasper is the kind of song that you don’t want to listen to by yourself; Jasper is a song for, and about, community. Again, he takes a common experience (spending time at the lake with friends) and with it he creates a timeless song. Jasper could be a Neil Young song from 1971 if it wanted to be, and that isn’t to say that Aidan takes from his influences exclusively. This is an Aidan Knight song, and that’s not hard to tell.
“Versicolour” is only 8 tracks long, and it comes to just over 28 minutes. By the end of the record, you feel as though you need more. My advice is this: play it again. And again. Let this record become one that defines a certain time in your life. I think it has the ability to do that. So let it.
“Versicolour” will be released, through Adventure Boys Club, digitally on March 2nd, and will be available in stores on March 9th. In the meantime, you can stream the entire record at Aidan’s Bandcamp site.
