Courtney's Top Ten Albums of The Decade
January 8th, 2010 | Posted by CourtneyAlright, here’s my top ten albums of the decade, plus a few honorable mentions. As you can see, Drummer John and I differ quite a bit, but I can promise you this: Slipknot and Kings of Leon probably wouldn’t have made this list if I wasn’t dating Drummer John. These are in order of how often I listened to these albums:
1.Deftones – White Pony, 2000 – I don’t even have words to describe this album. I really don’t know a whole lot of people outside of maybe my folks, who wouldn’t put this baby on their top ten. I still listen to this on a regular basis and I probably will for the rest of my life. In fact, it probably tops my list of all time favorite albums.
2. Interpol – Turn on the Bright Lights, 2002 – Whenever I hear Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down, I can’t help myself but to wail along at the top of my voice. Stelllllllllllllllllllllllllllla! Stelllllaha! In fact, I’m going to give that track a spin right now.
3. The Killers – Hot Fuss, 2004 – Honestly, I can’t pick a song on this album I don’t like, although Mr. Brightside did get a little too much airtime. Everywhere. Always.
4. Slipknot – All Hope Is Gone, 2008 – I live in Mexico for all of 2008 and 2009. Pregnant then a new Mom. This is the soundtrack of that time and happened to be about the only new record I listened to, being so busy, tired, fat and abroad. I think my baby boy might grow up to like metal.
5. Arcade Fire – Funeral, 2004 – Around this time I decided it would be a financially sound idea to take what little money I had and invest it in a 1973 royal purple low-rider Monte Carlo that only ran when it felt like it. My since-deceased close friend stole it on my birthday and had a stereo installed and I rode around town blasting Funeral by the Arcade Fire. Yes, I did get a lot of stares… and hysterical laughter. A short, extremely white chick driving the aforementioned car listening to Canadian indie rock? I wish I was kidding. I’m not.
6. Bloc Party – Silent Alarm, 2005 – This was the Superhouse era. Me and 3 of my friends and family, rented out a mansion for about 6 months. We also liked to party. I woke up many-a-morning to people I didn’t know, passed out in boxer briefs on my couch, cleaning my house, or hugging one of our 5 toilets. Many events stick in my mind as the strangest, like the morning I came downstairs for a drink of water at about 4am and my family room was pounding techno music, with strobe lights and about 20 people were dancing in it around a belly dancer. The reason I bring this up: I’ll never forget the night I walked into my house and found one of my brother’s friends bouncing up and down on our couches listening to Bloc Party, Silent Alarm, with no one else around. This disc got a lot of airplay in the Superhouse.
7. Kings of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak, 2004 – These guys are inexplicable fantastic. I couldn’t and cannot get enough of the Kings on Leon. This album was the soundtrack to many camping trips, and road trips with Drummer John.
8. The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls in America, 2007 – I sent this to my friend in Prison. He didn’t like it. There wasn’t enough double kick drums in it. Another reason to live within the law folks, prison makes you hate albums this caliber of awesome.
9. Outkast – Stankonia, 2000 – So Fresh, So Clean? Ms. Jackson? Bombs over Baghdad? Forever on my ‘pod, ladies and gents, forever. on. my. ‘pod.
10. Broken Social Scene – You Forgot It in People, 2002 – More Canadianity, I love this album. I can’t pick a favorite track. They’re all good.
Honorable Mentions: If I could include Mogwai’s Come on Die Young album, I would, but it was released in ‘99. I can’t even remember how many times I’ve seen them live, but Christmas Steps always steals the show. Shellac’s 1000 Hurts was listened to many times for it’s obvious angst-fuel. Belle and Sebastian were routinely spun during the first half of the decade, and life would have been a little less full without Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Sigur Ros. Outkast Speakerboxxx/The Love below (2003) was amazing. I loved Idlewild’s 100 Broken Windows from 2000. I also have to mention Franz Ferdinand, Sufjan Stevens and of course, the White Stripes.
